1. Introduction

(1) EDI (Electrodeionization) is a pure water manufacturing technology that combines ion exchange technology, ion exchange membrane technology and ion electromigration technology (electrodialysis technology).

(2) This technology uses ion exchange to achieve deep desalination to overcome the incomplete desalination caused by electrodialysis polarization, and uses electrodialysis polarization to produce water ionization to produce H and OH ions to achieve resin self-regeneration to overcome the defect of resin regeneration through chemical agents after failure.

(3) It is a new technology that has gradually emerged since the 1980s. After more than ten years of development, EDI technology has occupied a considerable part of the ultrapure water market in North America and Europe.

(4) EDI devices belong to fine water treatment systems and are generally used in conjunction with reverse osmosis (RO) to form an ultrapure water treatment system of pretreatment, reverse osmosis, and EDI devices, replacing the mixed ion exchange equipment of traditional water treatment processes.

(5) The EDI device requires a water resistivity of 0.025-0.5MΩ·cm, which can be fully met by the reverse osmosis device. The EDI device can produce ultrapure water with a resistivity of up to 18MΩ·cm or more.

2. Working Principle

(1) In EDI equipment, various ions in the influent are removed after passing through the resin, and the water is purified. At this time, the ion exchange principle is used to remove ions in the water. Because voltage is applied on both sides of the ion exchange membrane, water molecules are electrolyzed into H+ and OH- ions to regenerate the resin. At the same time, the ions exchanged by H+ and OH- ions are transferred to the concentrated water chamber for discharge under the action of a constant voltage and constant current power supply, thereby achieving the purpose of continuous regeneration and continuous use.

(2) Pretreatment of EDI feed water is the primary condition for EDI to achieve its optimal performance and reduce equipment failures. Contaminants in the feed water will have a negative impact on the desalination components, increase maintenance requirements and reduce the life of the membrane components.
